Returning Home

So I've been extremely bad in that I haven't really written a word since my return to Boston a week ago. It's been hectic in settling back into my old schedule and also incredibly comforting to be back in that original routine. There's something to be said for routines, especially when nothing else is the same. I rely on those to sometimes get me through the harder days when all I want to do is curl up in a ball and shut out the world. We all have those days, right? When the external pressures of everything just get the better of us.

At least I haven't had one of those days yet since my return. But after a week, if I'd had one, that'd be a bad start to the year and I'm distinctly working on having the good year.

One of my unofficial resolutions this year has been to get healthier. I'm actually paying attention to my calorie intakes (the wonders of technology) and even planning on joining a gym. Apparently the YMCA in Chinatown has a recreational badminton league (go figure in Chinatown) that I want to check out. It would be great to start playing again. Yay.

Let's see if maybe I can be healthier and happier by the time I graduate in May. Fingers crossed.

Avatar

First off, I don't care if it's 12:15. I still call this Saturday, therefore I'm keeping with my resolution of writing every day.

Went and saw Avatar today with family and friend. This is the second time seeing it, so I was able to grab a different perspective and really see the movie instead of just sitting there, being overwhelmed by the viewing experience. It didn't help that the first time I saw it, it was in 3D, and we were fifteen minutes late.

Visually, it's stunning. One of the best things I've ever seen. James Cameron definitely has a gift for imagination and the world he's created is worth going to see on its own. However, I wish it were about twenty minutes shorter. Despite the really comfortable seating at the Rotunda Theater, I was squirming hardcore in the last half hour, and wanted to jump around a little when we left. There are definitely points where it seems to drag, but it's still worth the time.

In terms of plot, I found it to be the age old story of a man finding his place in a different culture than his own and then having to fight against his original people to defend what he's come to cherish. Outside of that, I liked it. Maybe a bit more originality next time, Mr. Cameron... And the thinly veiled message didn't really help. I don't like being smacked upside the head with something. I may be a little dense, but even I couldn't miss that one. Unobtainium. Really?

The acting was worth the price of admission in itself. I'm a fan of Stephen Lang and seeing him in something new was great. The younger generation of actors were very good, and while most of the time, they were blue and had tails, Sam Worthington is hot.

Overall:

Go see Avatar. You're missing something big if you don't. This must be seen on the big screen.

Sherlock Holmes

I give it a thumbs up.

Going into the movie, I wasn't sure exactly how I would feel about it, outside of the "yay, stuff blows up" element. Besides the fact that things didn't blow up as much as I thought they would, good film over all.

I will admit that I never watched/read the originals and only know the plot based on allusions from other stories and conversations.

As a stand alone piece, it worked well. I didn't need to know of anything else and from what I heard, it might have been for the better in my case, since I tend to be a purist in adaptations. There is a great deal of complexity when it comes to the titular character of Sherlock Holmes that I found very intriguing as a character. Not to mention Robert Downey Jr. is just yummy.

Plenty of action and a nice level of complexity to the storyline that helped. A couple of jump in your seat moments though nothing particularly scary - always a plus with me.

I suppose the only downside of this particular movie was that I left feeling completely content in what I just saw. There was no desire or drive to continue learning more about anything, whether it be the history of the time or the story that it was pulled from. I find that the movies I love the most are the ones that make you want to do that.

Overall:
Liked it a great deal. Would definitely see it again and will probably add it to my growing collection of movies when it comes out.
Don't expect traditional, gentlemanly Sherlock Holmes that most older viewers apparently want or at least expected.
Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law were excellent. Acting alone makes it worth seeing.

Go see the movie and have fun.

A New Year's Start

This year, I'm going to do it. Maybe.

Keep the blog going and don't get bored after a few posts. Even if it's something small, I want to write about it because 2010 will be a year to remember for me. It's the year I'll graduate (God-willing) and the year I'll make changes to who I am in order to become more of who I want to be.

Occasionally, I'll refer to a past boyfriend or something, when the mood feels sufficiently down but my purpose is not to lament and be sappy about failed relationships because let's face it, we all have them - I just prefer to usually keep them to myself.

So here we start this new year, and my blog title takes on a new meaning for me. Knock on the Sky and Listen to the Sound is a Korean proverb that I thought was interesting. We all need to stop knocking on everything and just listen to the end result. Maybe at the end of next year, I'll have listened and learned something from when I choose to step forward and actually knock.

Resolutions for 2010:

  • Start a clean slate in terms of relationships.
  • Be more daring when it comes to guys.
  • Actually write on a regular basis.
We'll see if I can keep any of these resolutions by the end of next year. Here's to a new start for everyone. Happy 2010.
